Who we are

Julie and Marilena began collaborating to develop student-centered filmmaking in 2016, after they met serendipitously in a workshop for school-based occupational therapists. After they “produced” their very first student films using their backgrounds in film and theater, they knew their novel idea could inspire many more therapists and students alike. They developed in-service presentations, provided professional workshops for colleagues, and partnered with film-based non-profit agencies and cinemas to expand filmmaking in school-based occupational therapy services. In 2019, student films were debuted at an event they held, dubbed “The Film Festival from Mars” (because it was out of this world!) at Lincoln Center. Movies made by students with disabilities were showcased on the big screen in front of an audience of their peers and supporters. Students felt immense pride and gratification. Julie and Marilena are now sharing with others who work with students with special needs the numerous ways filmmaking can serve as a therapeutic tool that fosters creativity, social engagement, and self-determination.

Marilena Marchetti graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with her Master’s in Occupational Therapy. As an OT, she worked with children first in Chicago and then in New York City. Marilena is also a documentary filmmaker. Her work has appeared on the news websites CityLimits.org and Filtermag.org. In 2023, she toured “Swallow THIS: A Documentary about Methadone & Covid-19” across the United States with a social impact campaign sponsored by Open Society Foundations and the National Harm Reduction Coalition.

Julie Meslin, MS, OTR/L studied theater and English at Lehigh University and obtained her degree in occupational therapy from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. As an OT, Julie has worked with clients across the lifespan, in hospital, home, and school settings. Julie has also worked as an art teacher, program designer, and facilitator. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her two kids, husband, and dog.

The Mission

We believe children and youth with special needs deserve access to high-quality, project-based, and arts-based activities and programs. Filmmaking is a fun and empowering vehicle for meeting the educational, emotional, social, and developmental needs of students.

Engaging children with special needs in filmmaking empowers them to create culture, information, and entertainment.

Their perspectives and talents matter. They deserve to be heard, celebrated, and enjoyed in connection with the community at large.
